Rosh Hashanah | B’Sefer Hachaim

Join Community Shabbat, friends, and community leaders for a collaborative, vibrant, and anti-zionist Rosh Hashanah.

This year, 5786, we pray not only to be inscribed ourselves in the Book of Life / B’Sefer Hachaim but to reimagine and pray for a world where all life is valued. As abolitionist Ruth Wilson Gilmore says, “where life is precious, life is precious.” We pray for life, liberation, freedom and dignity for all and particularly for freedom and life in Palestine.

    What: Traditional egalitarian service followed by a Rosh Hashanah Seder + community dinner

    When: 6pm - 9pm on Monday, September 22

    Where: Backyard in Oakland (address sent following registration)

    Cost: Suggested contribution of $36-72 or pay what you can, 18% of money gathered goes to mutual aid in Palestine

    Arugula & Roasted Vegetable Salad

    Roasted butternut squash, carrots, and beets with a tahini–silan dressing

    Moroccan Fish Patties

    (Ktzitzot Dagim)

    Fish cakes simmered in a spiced sauce

    Baked Harissa Chickpeas with

    Leeks & Potatoes

    Served with garlic yogurt

    Roasted Green Beans

    With garlic and lemon

    Honey–Apple Almond Cake

REGISTER

  • We are meeting outside and masks will be optional. Please stay home if you are sick. 

  • The backyard is down 10 stairs and through the side gate. We will provide chairs. The bathroom is up a couple flights of stairs.

Yom Kippur

  • What: Community meal to break the fast of Yom Kippur 

    When: Oct 2 at 7:20 pm

    Where: Backyard in North Berkeley (address sent following registration)

    Food: Catering from Saul’s Restaurant - babaganoush, hummus, tabouleh, jerusalem salad, olives, feta, house pitas, falafel

    Cost: Suggested contribution of $24-36 or pay what you can, 10% of money gathered goes to mutual aid in Palestine

Community Shabbat is hosting a Yom Kippur Break-Fast.

We recommend Yom Kippur services at Beyt Tikkun, Kehilla, and TzimTzum.
